Richard Hammond's Invisible Worlds Episode 3 March 30, 9pm GMT on BBC One

[UV, FL] Enhancing the visibility of fossil cephalopods soft tissue structures

I had the honor to work with Neal Larson (yeah, THAT Neal Larson who discovered SUE, the T-Rex, with his brother Peter) on a paper on fossilized cephalopods found in Hajoula, Lebanon. I used my remapping technology consisting of a visible image (A), a UV stimulated visible fluorescence image (B) to enhance the visibility of preserved soft tissue structures (C) by combining them into one multispectral image.

My UV shots on BBC's "Richard Hammond's Invisible Worlds" Episode 2

These are my still images BBC had chosen for their production of episode 2 of "Richard Hammond's Invisible Worlds". These are some of my earliest works which must have impressed them the most. Here again for your viewing pleasure ....

Well, of course I feel honored that they gave me a chance to show my work, thus allowing the viewers of that series to understand, that there is so much more (beauty) beyond our very limited visual range!

Further on the technical side to contribute to the HDTV filming by finding suitable UV sensitive HDTV-cameras and suitable light sources, plus later then using my special lenses + filters for the actual filming of the scenes. That was all a great challenge but big fun working with such a professional team!

Carl Zeiss UV-Planar 4/60mm

Today let me present you a lens which was thought to have gotten lost, but now it finally made it here after more then 4 months of travel: The extremely rare (5 or so ever made; that second one of mine is #4) Carl Zeiss UV-Planar 4/60mm lens. Zeiss serial number range #258xxx stands for special order lenses, prototypes etc. Funny that the Zeiss files don't even have that one listed...

A lens made for UV Photography and UV enlarging which consists of quartz and special glass. Symmetrical Gauss design, 6 lenses in 4 groups. Color corrected for 320-450nm, transmits down to 300nm. Full data is here.  

If anyone wonders about the lens coating: Zeiss has applied a special lens coating which transmits UV light, thus it does not look like a normal multicoated lens.

Richard Hammond's Invisible Worlds begins 16th March on BBC1

BBC Press Office announced March 3rd that (quote) Richard Hammond's Invisible Worlds begins 16th March, 3 episodes @ 9pm on BBC1 (unquote).

Just got the confirmation that episode 2 + 3 will be aired the following weeks later at the same time (March 23 + 30). My contribution will be seen in episode 2 on March 23, "Out of Sight". ((quote from BBC)) In Out Of Sight, Richard explores the extraordinary wonders of the world beyond the visible spectrum.
